TOVEN

Toven poured himself another cup of coffee while thinking about what Kian had said, and even more so about the things he hadn't said.

Was it safe for him to just take the guy's word that he meant Mia and him no harm? What if he was laying a trap for them?

Making him frantic over Mia's supposedly impending transition was a good strategy to scare Toven into forgetting about his own safety and going blindly where Kian led him.

Lifting the cup, he regarded Annani's son, searching his expression for clues. "This village of yours, is it home only to immortals, or do you employ humans?"

"We don't have humans in the village, but we have two Dormants who are not ready to be induced yet."

"We had one more." Andrew sighed. "A human who wasn't a Dormant. My wife and I are also transitioned Dormants, and when we moved here, we had to take her ailing stepfather with us. He suffered from dementia, so secrecy wasn't a problem. He passed away a year ago."

Toven dipped his head. "My condolences."

"Thank you."

If that had been meant to distract him from asking more questions, it hadn't worked. "How many people live in the village?"

"A few hundred," Kian said. "Why all the questions?"

Apparently, Annani's daughters and granddaughters had been busy. If her people found the first Dormant about four and a half years ago, then all those immortals were the descendants of Annani.

"I can't take Mia to a place I know nothing about. I might be walking into a trap."

Kian snorted. "You're a god. You can seize the minds of everyone living in the village. I'm the one who's taking a risk by inviting you."

Toven shrugged. "You have Annani. She was powerful as a girl. I can only imagine how powerful she is five thousand years later."

"If you wish, I can put Orion on the line. He was suspicious of us as well, but Geraldine assuaged his fears."

"I can't be sure that they are not being coerced. What I can be sure of is that neither of them has any fondness for me. I turned my back on Orion, and I didn't know that Geraldine existed. But if Orion found her by investigating the women in my journal, then I could have done the same, but it didn't even occur to me. My children have no reason to stand in my corner."

Letting out a breath, Kian pulled out his phone. "I guess the only one you'll believe is my mother. I wanted to tell her about you in person, but you leave me no choice."

Toven lifted his hand. "You can put the phone down. I don't trust Annani either. She might be a completely different person now. Fates know that I am."

"How can I convince you then?"

"Tell me why it's so important to you to get Mia and me into your village."

"Because she could die, and if she does, you will find a way to end your life as well, and I don't want that to happen if I can help it.
